The hyperdirect pathway (cortex-STN-GPi), direct pathway (cortex-striatum-GPi) and indirect pathways (cortex-striatum-GPe-STN-GPi) are all interrupted by pathology, thereby precluding modulation of the thalamus and midbrain locomotor region (MLR), which includes the pedunculopontine and cuneiform nuclei.
